Hints
Stuck? Open one hint at a time. None of them gives away an answer. If a count doesn’t match yours, a clue earlier on has gone astray: go back over them one by one.
Case 1: The missing painting
Hint 1
Clue 1: “under 40 cm wide” is about width, the second number in the size (height × width).
Hint 2
Clue 4: a painting Hester “never let go” was never sold, so the list says it was sold by “the estate”. Clue 5: the last two years of the war are 1944 and 1945.
Hint 3
After clues 1 to 3 you should have 33 paintings left; after clue 5, 7.
Case 2: The prize
Hint 1
Clue 1: “her last two years at the School” means two years. Hester’s life, on the reference page, says when she was at Glasgow.
Hint 2
Clue 2: the painting shows a person, so its title names one: a woman, a girl, a model or Hester herself. Clue 4: “Mr Carrick has a buyer” tells you who first sold it.
Hint 3
After clue 3 you should have 9 left; after clue 5, 3.
Case 3: The gift
Hint 1
Clue 4: Hester’s life, on the reference page, says when Isobel became her student.
Hint 2
Clue 6: the list says who first sold each painting. Look for “private, Fife”.
Hint 3
After clue 4 you should have 137 left; after clue 6, 2.
Case 4: Never for sale
Hint 1
Clue 4: Hester reused titles. Match each stock book line by title, year and size, and keep only those marked “returned to artist”.
Hint 2
Clue 5: “a person” means the title names one. Clue 7: 45 cm is the width, the second number.
Hint 3
After clue 3 you should have 95 left; after clue 4, 16; after clue 6, 2.
Case 5: The forgery
Hint 1
Clue 2: “to go with the others” means it went where the others went. Who first sold it?
Hint 2
Clue 4: Hester’s life, on the reference page, says how she signed from the year she started teaching. Clue 6: the paints page says when Cryla first went on sale, so the postmark leaves two possible years.
Hint 3
After clue 3 you should have 92 left; after clue 5, 22; after clue 7, 3.
